Summary
Grant Overview
Local Agriculture Resilience Program in the Northern Mariana Islands
The Northern Mariana Islands face critical food security challenges mainly due to their reliance on imported goods, which can account for up to 90% of all food consumed locally. This dependency not only strains the economy but also reduces the availability of fresh produce for residents. According to the Department of Lands and Natural Resources, local agricultural production meets less than 10% of the islands' food needs, creating major vulnerabilities.
Local farmers encounter numerous obstacles, including limited access to modern farming techniques, inadequate irrigation systems, and insufficient infrastructure to support agriculture. This situation is particularly dire for smallholder farmers who lack the financial resources to scale their operations or invest in sustainable practices.
In response, the Local Agriculture Resilience Program seeks to develop the agricultural sector by funding infrastructure improvements such as irrigation systems, greenhouses, and training for local farmers. The initiative aims to cultivate self-sufficiency in the islands' food production. By supporting the enhancement of local agriculture, this program not only aims to boost food security but also encourages sustainable farming practices that protect the unique environment of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The targeted outcomes include increased agricultural yields and reduced dependency on imported goods, allowing communities to achieve greater food security. The program also fosters economic independence, providing farmers with more control over their livelihoods while ensuring that the local food system is resilient. This approach not only addresses immediate food security concerns but also strengthens community ties, encouraging a culture of sustainability and self-reliance within the Northern Mariana Islands.
