Grant Overview

Combating Climate Change through Cultural Heritage in the Northern Mariana Islands

The Northern Mariana Islands face significant vulnerabilities due to climate change, including rising sea levels and extreme weather events. These environmental stresses threaten both the native culture and traditional practices that have been passed down through generations. According to a local study, 85% of Indigenous respondents expressed concern that climate change will adversely affect their cultural heritage and the local environment.

Indigenous communitieswho rely on natural resources for their livelihood and cultural practicesare particularly impacted. These groups often possess traditional ecological knowledge that can contribute to climate resilience, but they need support and resources to initiate effective adaptation strategies. Furthermore, younger generations may lack the environmental education necessary to preserve their cultural practices against climate change threats.

To address these concerns, the Cultural Heritage and Climate Resilience Workshops will facilitate knowledge exchange among local communities. By integrating traditional cultural practices with modern climate resilience strategies, the workshops will aim to educate community members about conservation efforts and sustainable practices that align with their cultural values. Participants will have opportunities to engage with environmental experts and learn about climate impacts on specific resources they rely on, fostering a sense of responsibility toward preserving both culture and environment effectively.

The importance of these workshops extends beyond education; they promote community cohesion and resilience. Ensuring that Indigenous knowledge and practices are included in climate adaptation strategies is essential for maintaining cultural identity in the face of environmental change. Therefore, the workshops will serve as a platform for community engagement, enabling participants to share their experiences while learning from one another.

By aligning cultural heritage with efforts toward climate resilience, the Northern Mariana Islands can harness traditional knowledge in innovative ways, adapting alongside the changing environment effectively. Implementation will require coordination with local leaders, ensuring that all workshops are culturally relevant and grounded in community needs.
