Grant Overview

Workforce Training in Hospitality and Tourism for Tribal Youth in the Northern Mariana Islands

In the Northern Mariana Islands (NMI), the hospitality and tourism industry represents a significant portion of the local economy, accounting for almost 44% of GDP according to the Commonwealth Bureau of Statistics. However, despite this opportunity, there is a noticeable skills gap among youth, particularly within Tribal communities. Approximately 42% of high school graduates in the NMI do not pursue higher education or vocational training, creating a workforce that often lacks the necessary skillsets to meet the demand in this vital sector. This situation is further complicated by the geographic isolation of the islands, which limits exposure to diverse career paths and professional networking opportunities.

Youth in the Northern Mariana Islands encounter numerous barriers when it comes to accessing skills training and employment. Many graduates fail to secure jobs within the hospitality sector, which struggles to find qualified candidates. This issue is exacerbated by a lack of structured training programs, mentoring, and resources that align with industry needs. The absence of targeted workforce development initiatives has left gaps that hinder the economic mobility of Tribal youth and perpetuates cycles of poverty and underemployment within these communities.

This grant program aims to establish a workforce training initiative focused on Tribal youth in the Northern Mariana Islands, specifically in the hospitality and tourism sector. By addressing the growing demand for skilled labor in this critical economic area, the project will offer hands-on training and certification programs that equip youth with qualifications and experience necessary for sustainable employment. The initiative recognizes the importance of cultural competency in providing training that resonates with participants and acknowledges the unique perspectives that Tribal youth bring to the hospitality industry.

Funding will be allocated toward developing training curricula that incorporate essential skills such as customer service, event management, and culinary arts, tailored to meet industry standards. Collaborations with local hotels and restaurants will facilitate job placement opportunities and internships, providing participants with invaluable on-the-job experience. In aligning training programs with the region’s cultural heritage, the initiative will not only prepare youth for employment but also enhance the overall visitor experience by infusing local culture into service delivery.

The Northern Mariana Islands' economy relies heavily on a robust hospitality sector, making this initiative particularly relevant. By filling the skills gap among Tribal youth, the program aims to facilitate their integration into the workforce while promoting economic growth and cultural pride throughout the islands. This funding initiative offers a pathway to workforce readiness, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of the Northern Mariana Islands.
