Grant Overview
Youth Employment Skills Development Program in the Northern Mariana Islands
The Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) face significant challenges concerning youth unemployment, with rates reported at approximately 25%, which are among the highest in the Pacific region. Limited job opportunities, compounded by economic shifts in the tourism and manufacturing sectors, hinder the potential of young residents to secure gainful employment. The local workforce, comprising about 55,000 individuals, often lacks the vocational training needed to meet the evolving demands of these industries.
The youth demographic, particularly those aged 16-24, is disproportionately impacted by these economic limitations, contributing to a cycle of underemployment and social challenges. As many young individuals struggle to transition from education to the job market, innovative and practical training initiatives become vital. Without intervention, the potential for economic mobility and community development remains severely restricted.
The Youth Employment Skills Development Program specifically aims to provide vocational training opportunities tailored for young people in the CNMI. Funding for this program will facilitate partnerships with local businesses to offer hands-on training in various trades, including hospitality, agriculture, and technology. This approach ensures that participants gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that align with local job market needs.
Expected outcomes for this initiative include a measurable increase in the percentage of participants who secure employment post-training. This outcome matters significantly in the CNMI context as it can alleviate some of the economic pressures faced by families and communities. The implementation strategy will involve close collaboration with local stakeholders, including schools and employers, to ensure training aligns with current job opportunities and equips participants with essential workforce skills.
